Reaction of e/sub aq/- + H3O+. Concentration effects of acid or salts

  • 1. Argonne National Lab., IL

Description

The rate constant, k(e/sub aq/- + H3O+), has been measured in dilute HClO4, alone and with LiClO4 added up to 2.5 M, and in concentrated HClO4, alone and with LiClO4 or NaClO4 added up to 2.5 M. The rate constant has the same dependence upon total concentration either for HClO4 alone or for HClO4 + LiClO4. The results show that changes in k(e/sub aq/- + H3O+) are determined by changes in the diffusion-controlled encounter rate and by changes in the activities of e/sub aq/- and H3O+. Any time-dependent effect in the rate constant is not more than 10 percent for hydrated electrons with lifetimes longer than 30 ps
