Particle emission from metal surfaces irradiated with MeV protons

  • 1. Department of Engineering Physics and Institute for Materials Research, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, L8S 4M1, Canada

Description

Particle emission yields from cold-rolled and annealed Fe, Nb, and Au surfaces under MeV proton bombardment are reported. 16-MeV protons are used to simulate the surface sputtering by 14-MeV neutrons which is of interest for nuclear fusion. Sputtering yields of less than 2 × 10⁻⁴ are reported. "Chunk emission" is not observed.
