Application of the CIDEM project to the availability improvement of current nuclear power plants

  • 1. EDF-SEPTEN/EPN CIDEM Group, 69628 Villeurbanne Cedex (France)

Description

The TN 120 transport/storage cask for WWER-440 spent fuel can accommodate 120 spent fuel assemblies with 55,000 MWd/tU maximum burn-up and 7-year cooling time. The dimensions are 3.9 m in length and 2.6 m in diameter. The empty cask weighs 84 tons. It could be equipped with shock absorbing covers. The maximum weight of the loaded cask with covers is 116 tons under transport conditions. Gamma shielding is provided by a forged steel shell, neutron protection by a thick layer of borated resin enclosed between the forged steel body and the external shell. A basket made of borated aluminium guarantees the subcriticality of the contents during normal operation as well as during accident conditions. (M.D.)
