Description

The survival of irradiated LMR white rats treated with ZnCl2 or ZnSO4 as radioprotector. Three months old male white rats (LMR strain) were gamma (60 Co) irradiated with single doses of 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 Gy, and treated with ZnCl2 or ZnSO4 pre-or post-irradiation for 10 days through their drinking water in concentrations of 1000, 1500 or 2000 ppm. The ZnCl2 1000 ppm pre-irradiation gave the highest radio-protection, followed by ZnSO4 2000 ppm post p irradiation with a mortality threshold dose 6 and 9 Gy and finally ZnSO4 and ZnCl2 1500 postirradiation (threshold dose between 3 and 6 Gy). The Zn distribution among various organs seemed to vary, showing low concentrations in actively metabolizing organs and high concentration in depository organs. (author). 2 figs.; 7 refs
