First treatment of patients with heavy ions in Europe: medical physics aspects

Description
In December 1997 the first two patients have been treated with carbon ions at the radiation therapy facility of the heavy ion research center, GSI (Darmstadt). Hereby a conformal raster scanning technique was used. For clinical dosimetry, a protocol for the determination of absorbed dose to water and techniques to measure dose distributions were developed. Based on the principle of stereotactic patient positioning, an additional position verification system using X-ray tubes was installed. Clinical treatment planning is based on a special algorithm for inverse treatment planning which was integrated into the VOXELPLAN system developed at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). In order to perform acceptance and constancy checks a quality management program was outlined and sucessfully carried out. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
An der Strahlentherapieanlage der Gesellschaft fuer Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt wurde im Dezember 1997 an zwei Patienten erstmals eine strahlentherapeutische Behandlung mit Kohlenstoffionen mit Hilfe eines tumorkonformen Rasterbestrahlungsverfahrens durchgefuehrt. Fuer die Dosimetrie wurden ein Protokoll zur Bestimmung der Wasserenergiedosis sowie Techniken zur Messung von Dosisverteilungen entwickelt. Aufbauend auf dem Prinzip der stereotaktischen Patientenpositionierung wurde eine zusaetzliche Positionskontrolle mittels Roentgenroehren installiert. Die Bestrahlungsplanung basiert auf einem speziellen Algorithmus zur inversen Bestrahlungsplanung, der in das am Deutschen Krebsforschungszentrum (DKFZ) entwickelte VOXELPLAN-System integriert wurde. Fuer die Abnahme- und Konstanzpruefungen wurde ein Qualitaetssicherungsprogramm entworfen, das erfolgreich durchgefuehrt wurde. (orig.)Additional details
