Multiply charged ions produced by multiphoton absorption in rare gas atoms
- 1. Centre d'Etudes Nucleaires de Saclay, Gif-sur-Yvette, France
Description
Production of multiply chargaed ions by means of collisionless multiphoton ionization of rare gases at 532 and 1064 has been achieved using a Nd:YAG laser. The laser pulse was focused into a vacuum chamber by an aspheric lens which was corrected to avoid spherical aberrations. The vacuum chamber was pumped to 10 to the -8th Torr and filled with Ne, Xe, and He gas at a static pressure of 0.0005 Torr. Measurements of the number of ions formed at the different charge levels were obtained for different levels of laser intensity. Some salient features of the ionization threshold of the laser radiation are described. 10 refs
