Radiation induced sterility in the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta Busck. (Lepidoptera Tortricidae)

  • 1. Institute of Plant Protection, Kostinbrod (Bulgaria)

Description

Results of studies on the sterilizing effects of gamma radiation, applied to oriental moth pupae or adults, are reported. The parameters of the induced sterility have been determined separately for individuals of both sexes. In males as well as in females the sterility is due chiefly to emergence of dominant lethal mutations in spermatozoa or oocytes which cause F1 egg mortality. Correspondingly, the frequency dynamics of these lethals is described by mixed types or sigmoid dose-response curves. The experimental data are interpreted in relation to sterile-insect release method for autocidal control of Gr. molesta. (author)
