Elastic pp scattering excitation functions at intermediate energies

Description

Excitation functions of proton-proton elastic scattering cross sections have been measured in narrow momentum steps in the momentum range 1.1 to 3.3 GeV/c (kinetic energy range 0.5 to 2.5 GeV) and the angular range 35 deg. ≤Θcm≤90 deg. with a detector providing ΔΘcm≅1.4 deg. resolution and 82% solid angle coverage. Measurements have been performed ocntinuously during projectile acceleration in the Cooler Synchrotron COSY with an internal polypropylene (CH2) fiber target, taking particular care to monitor luminosity as a function of beam energy. The results provide excitation functions and angular distributions of unprecedented precision and internal consistency. No evidence for narrow structures was found. The measured cross sections are compared to a recent phase shift analysis. In phase 2 of the experiment excitation functions of the analyzing power A and the polarization correlation parameters ANN, ASS and ASL will be measured using a polarized proton beam and a polarized atomic beam target
