Superdeformed states appeared in the spherical doubly magic nucleus, 40Ca

Description

A superdeformed rotational band has been observed in the spherical doubly magic, self-conjugate nucleus, 40Ca. This finding was made by using the latest generation of γ-ray spectrometer, Gammasphere, with the charged particle detector, Microball. Increased sensitivity obtained by these detectors has made it possible to identify a new region of superdeformation in the N=Z light mass nuclei, and provided fascinating prospects in the study of high-spin states in this region.
