Thermal stability of silicide coatings on molybdenum and its alloys

  • 1. AN SSSR, Moscow (Russian Federation). Inst. Fizicheskoj Khimii

Description

Molybdenum samples as well as Mo + W + Re alloys are subjected to diffusion annealing in silicon powder and in a powder mixture containing the highest chromium silicide, CrSi2, and copper fluoride. The thermal stability of a coating produced by the method described is determined. It is shown that the main phase providing for protection of Mo and its alloys against oxidation in the air within 800-1800 deg C temperature region, is a MoSi2 one, and at 1850-2150 deg C - Mo5Si3. Silicide coatings on molybdenum and its alloys under their thickness exceeding 50 μm are deficient, i.e. they have cracks and pores
