The legal basis of the right of American Indians to hold their lands and territories as sovereigns and as owners of that land is reviewed. The treaty entered into in 1855 between the bands and tribes that now compose the Yakima Indian Nation and the United States of America is discussed and the impact of this treaty on the use of these lands for any purpose other than the benefit of the Yakima Indian Reservation and its members is pointed out
