The approach to safety for Sizewell B

  • 1. CEGB Project Management Team, Booths Hall (UK)
  • 2. Central Electricity Generating Board, London (UK). Nuclear Health and Safety Dept.

Description

The main aspects of the design safety case for Sizewell B are described. The station is designed to comply with the stringent safety criteria and guide-lines which apply to Central Electricity Generating Board nuclear plants. These standards and the steps involved in the process that are necessary to achieve a design which will meet them are described. The process includes high standards of design and manufacture of components, provision of redundant plant and diverse systems and extensive fault analyses. These features lead to the conclusion that the Sizewell B design is such that the probability of any significant radioactivity release to the environment is very low and that the risk of harm to the public is negligibly small.
