The Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear accident - Lessons learned regarding safety, from expertise to research

This report first recalls the decisions taken at the French and at the European level after the Fukushima accident on the French side with the implementation of complementary safety assessments, and on the European side with a global assessment of safety transparency for all European reactors. The report briefly discusses the conclusions of the complementary safety assessments in France: it outlines the importance and the strengthening of existing approaches, and the need to complement them by an innovative approach. It outlines the need for an accurate definition of the hard core, and comments how these complementary assessments have been reviewed and assessed by European bodies. It outlines that learning lessons from this event will be a long process which will rely on expertise, research and international cooperation
