Sessional Committee on the Environment report

Description

A report on the activities of the Sessional Committee on the Environment is presented. The Committee has been charged to monitor and watch over the various government and non-government agencies participating in the mining and monitoring of uranium in the Alligator Rivers Region with specific emphasis on any impact this has on the environment. The Committee acknowledged that the Commonwealth Government, having a major responsibility for uranium mining in the Northern Territory, has a need for an organisation such as the Office of the Supervising Scientist (OSS) to review the operation of the mining of uranium as well as associated environmental matters. It has however advocated the relocation of the OSS and its research and administrative branches to the Northern Territory. The report also contains a brief account of the Committee's visit to Lucas Heights and Roxby Downs which inform of activities which were of direct relevance to the Alligator River Region
