Edge transport barrier in tokamak plasma. MHD instability induced by the surface transport barrier

  • 1. Japan Atomic Energy Research Inst., Naka, Ibaraki (Japan). Naka Fusion Research Establishment

Description

Existence of the edge transport barrier produces instabilities due to a steep pressure gradient and a surface current. Behaviors of the different types of edge localized modes (ELMs) are reviewed based on experimental observations in many tokamak devices, and the effects of ELMs on energy confinement, global stability, and divertor heat load are included. Controls of these instabilities are essential for optimization of the integrated tokamak performance. (author)
