Description

A survey is given on design principles of ion source and recoil mass separators. Modern multistage ion source separators are discussed that can achieve a low mass cross contamination as well as an element separation within one isobar. The different types of recoil separators are outlined also including new time-of-flight separators and filters which eliminate the primary beam in heavy ion reactions with extreme rejection factors.
