Description

JINR has accumulated half a century of experience in treating cancer patients with proton beams of the so-called phasotron (synchrocyclotron), as well as in the field of development and creation of specialized accelerators for these purposes. Recently a new method of the enhancement of low-LET ionizing radiation's biological effectiveness by the transformation of non-lethal DNA damage to lethal has been invented and patented by the JINR LRB. This promises a breakthrough in the effectiveness of using proton beams for the treatment of cancer and creates the conditions for the establishment of a research biomedical center for proton therapy of cancer. It is proposed to use the commercially available accelerator with an additional proton beam lines for biological research as the technical basis of the new biomedical research center.
