Coolant circuit contamination and decontamination experience at WSGHWR

  • 1. UKAEA Atomic Energy Establishment, Winfrith

Description

Routine decontaminations of the WSGHWR coolant circuits since 1969 have resulted in the saving of between 3000 and 4000 man Rems. Considerable experience in control of plant scale decontaminations has been obtained. The use of TURCO 4521 was discontinued after 1980 when it was shown that a LOMI reagent (vanadous formate/ picolinate) was equally effective and less corrosive. A parallel development programme has provided chemical and radiochemical evidence on the retention of activity within stainless steel oxide films. The forward programme aims at validating a process for the more effective solution of these active films
