Spectra of AE Andromedae and the Hubble--Sandage variables in M31 and M33

  • 1. University of Minnesota, Minneapolis

Description

Image-tube spectrograms at 83 A mm-1 and 90 A mm-1 have been obtained of AE And and the Hubble-Sandage variables AF And (variable 19 in M31) and variables B, C, and 2 in M33. The spectra of these extragalactic supergiants are described in detail in the paper. The spectra of all five stars have a strong, hot continuum with no Balmer discontinuity. The emission-line spectrum of AE And is very much like eta Car, and it is suggested that all five stars may be related to objects like eta Car and S Dor
