Nuclear structure studies with muonic x rays
Description
The muonic isomer shift of the 2614-keV gamma transition in 208Pb was measured as 6.18 +- 0.28 keV. This result is in disagreement with interpretation of the 3- state as a one-phonon octupole vibration. Anomalous transitions in the muonic spectra of 188Os and 172Yb were interpreted as nuclear resonances involving the muonic 2p and 3d levels. Such resonances appear to be reasonably general phenomena. A sequence of Os nuclei (186, 188, 190, 192) was studied with muonic x rays. The Barrett radii for the monopole part of the nuclear charge distribution were extracted. Isotope shifts are consistent with previously observed trends for nuclei in this mass region. Electromagnetic moments involving the first and second excited 2+ states in these nuclei were determined from the muonic data using a model-independent method of analysis. The values of these moments are compared with several theories. The precise data from the present experiment indicate a deviation from theoretical calculations of the pairing-plus-quadrupole model that has not been evident in past measurements due to large experimental uncertainties
