Life cycle analysis of a pumped storage system in comparison to other electrical energy storage systems with special consideration of energy policy, regulatory and social aspects
Description
The goal of greenhouse gas neutrality, the expansion of renewable energies, the phase-out of nuclear power generation and the planned phase-out of coalfired power generation have initiated a historically unprecedented change. The path we have taken makes it necessary to decouple electricity generation and consumption in terms of space and time. The electrical energy storage systems required for this have been anchored in energy law as an independent, fourth pillar since 2023. This work makes a contribution to understanding the upcoming challenges by taking a holistic view of energy storages. The focus is on a detailed, critical and comparative life cycle analysis of a pumped hydro storage, battery storage and hydrogen storage. Special consideration is given to the historical context of energy policy, which illustrates the influence of its decisions on the energy system; the discussion of the necessary raw materials under geopolitical aspects; regulatory barriers to energy storage and social aspects with regard to the acceptance of large-scale infrastructural projects. The study concludes that the pumped storage system examined has the lowest environmental impact, ahead of hydrogen and battery storage. The results are placed in the context of existing literature. A critical analysis of the influence of various boundary conditions such as the functional unit, the standardization of the service life, the influence of the stored electricity and the quality of the databases with regard to recycling is carried out. If the data quality of the databases used sufficiently reflects the recycling process, the analysis must be expanded. Furthermore, the geopolitical availability of the raw materials used must be taken into account in decision-making processes and it must be established that all the energy storage systems considered have a right to exist in the energy system of the future.
Abstract (German)
Die daf#Latin Small Letter U With Diaeresis#r notwendigen elektrischen Energiespeicher sind seit 2023 als eigenst#Latin Small Letter A With Diaeresis#ndige, vierte S#Latin Small Letter A With Diaeresis#ule im Energierecht verankert. Recycling findet statt. Additional details
