Segregation effects in welded austenitic stainless steels

Description
Techniques of scanning electron microscopy and microprobe analysis have been used to study segregation effects due to tungsten inert gas welding in austenitic stainless steels of the AISI type 304, 304L, 316 and 316L. Considerable increase in chromium to iron ratio has been observed in well-defined zones on the parent metal and on the weld heads. This localized change in surface composition is attributed to the formation of M/sub/23C/sub/6 type precipitates, and preferential precipitation in certain zones is explained in terms of time temperature growth curve of the carbide.
