The whole-body counter of the radiation centre Giessen

Description

The layout of the whole-body counter at the institute for biophysics of the Giessen radiation centre is decribed. With suitable collimators, the whole-body counter may be used to determine the radioactivity in human and animal organs. The shielding and the measuring and waiting rooms for the patients are described with regard to their technical details. The whole-body counting system enables the radioactivity and the retention of various radioisotopes (e.g. 58Co-vitamin B12, 40K, 54Mn, 137Co, 131J, 22Na) to be measured. The estimation of the radiation exposure due to different types of examinations in nuclear medicine, in terms of the critical organs for each type of examination, is very accurate with this counting device. Abstract (German)

Der Aufbau des Ganzkoerperzaehlers im Institut fuer Biophysik des Strahlenzentrums Giessen wird beschrieben. Mit geeigneten Kollimatoren ermoeglicht der Ganzkoerperzaehler den Einsatz zur Bestimmung der Radioaktivitaet in einzelnen Organen bei Mensch und Tier. Die Abschirmung, Mess- und Warteraeume der Patienten werden in ihren technischen Einzelheiten beschrieben. Die Ganzkoerpermessanlage ermoeglicht die Messung der Radioaktivitaet und Retention verschiedener Radioisotope (z.B. 58Co-Vitamin B12, 40K, 54Mn, 137Co, 131J, 22Na). Die Abschaetzung der Strahlenbelastung bei verschiedenen nuklearmedizinischen Untersuchungen bezogen auf die entsprechenden kritischen Organe ist mit dem Geraet sehr genau. (GSE)
