Return current amplification effect upon interaction of an intense relativistic electron beam with a gas target

Description

Experiments on injection of a 1.5 MeV, 50 kA, 20 ns high-current electron beam into neutral gas are described. The conditions are found under which the amplitude of the return current induced by the primary electron beam in the plasma it creates is 2-3 times higher than the beam current. It is shown that the observed effect can be explained by beam-plasma turbulence theory and the characteristics of the equivalent electrical circuit of the experiment
