Photon nuclear scattering on lead and bismuth in the region of the giant resonance

Description

The results of monochromatic photon nuclear scattering studies on natural lead and bismuth targets are presented. The cross sections for the inelastic scattering leading to the first excited levels of 204Pb, 206Pb and 207Pb are important, in agreement with theoretical predictions. The elastic scattering amplitude is related to the total photon absorption by dispersion relations. It is then possible to determine the spin of resonances excited by the reaction studied. Precise measurements carried out between 14 and 20MeV revealed that the angular distribution cannot be explained by a single dipolar resonance. A quadrupolar resonance at E2=14MeV must be introduced

Abstract (French)

On presente les resultats de l'etude de la diffusion nucleaire de photons monochromatiques sur des cibles de plomb et de bismuth naturels. On a montre que la section efficace de diffusion inelastique vers les premiers niveaux excites de 204Pb, 206Pb et 207Pb est importante, conformement aux previsions theoriques. D'autre part l'amplitude de diffusion elastique est reliee a l'absorption totale de photons par les relations de dispersion. Il est alors possible de determiner les spins des resonances excitees par la reaction etudiee. Les mesures precises realisees entre 14 et 20MeV ont montre que la distribution angulaire ne pouvait pas s'expliquer par une seule resonance geante dipolaire. Il faut introduire une resonance quadrupolaire d'energie E2=14MeV
