Comparative performance of maize hybrid

  • 1. National Plant Breeding Research Centre, Njoro (Kenya)

Description

Liberalisation of the seed industry has brought in many players in the seed market. Some of the seeds that the farmers are planting may not therefore be well adapted to their environments. A trial was conducted in the year 2001 to the performance of hybrid maize in Njoro, Rongai and Lare Divisions of Nakuru District. Eleven hybrids, which include both locally, released and imported hybrids, were compared in a Randomised Complete Block Design with three replicates in the farmers' fields. Results indicated that 9401 out yielded all the other hybrids except H 628. The yields from the 500 series compared well with those of the 600 series in nearly all the locations except H 511, H 513 and HB 512 which yielded the least. (author)
