Hadron-nuclear interactions at 100 GeV and nuclear cascading
Description
We are continuing our studies of the interactions, p, antip, π+, π-, k+ with targets of Mg, Ag and Au. The events have been divided up into categories depending on the number of emitted protons. In this fashion the division is made which the number of produced pions varies from slightly more than in hadron-nucleon collisions to four times more. We have studied in particular the characteristics of the high multiplicity events since they are most different from nucleonic interactions. These events are mainly produced in collisions with Ag and Au nuclei and very seldom in Mg. In this high multiplicity sample the number of pions produced is about three to four times the average multiplicity in a hadron-nucleon collision. The number of fast nucleons (p>300 MeV.c) knocked out of the struck nucleus is on the average 20. These events constitute over 35% of the sample of interactions in silver and gold. These results are difficult to understand in terms of a simple cascade model of interactions in the nuclei. A model in which the cross section for secondary interaction increases with distance is suggested
