Heliospheric features associated with the super intense geo-magnetic storm observed on 17 march 2015

Description
Major solar flares and their associated Halo-CMEs (Coronal mass ejections) plays an important role in heliospheric disturbances. The largest geomagnetic storm in solar cycle 24 occurred during 17–18 March 2015 where the main phase of the storm commenced from 07:00 UT of 17 March 2015 and reached the Dst negative minimum (-223 nT) at 22:00 UT. In this paper we have studied heliospheric disturbance during the time period from 10 to 31 March 2015. The source of the storm can be traced back to the solar event on 15 March 2015. At ~ 2:10 UT on that day, SOHO/LASCO C3 recorded a partial halo coronal mass ejection (CME), which was associated with a C9.1/1F flare (S22W25) and a series of type II/IV radio bursts. The propagation speed of this CME is estimated to be ~668 km/s for the period 02:10–06:20 UT. An interplanetary (IP) shock, likely driven by the related ICME, arrived at the Wind spacecraft at 03:59 UT on 17 March and for bush Decrease (FDs) 3.5% also recorded on 17 March 2015. (author)
