The GAIA Fuel Assembly

Description

Lead assemblies of GAIA – the latest AREVA PWR fuel assemblies design - reached now the final assembly burn up of in average 59 MWd/kgU and confirm all expectations. GAIA provides very high resistance to fuel assembly bow, higher thermal hydraulic performance, intrinsically safe behavior under seismic conditions and a better resistance against debris thanks to GRIP. In summary, GAIA reduces operating costs due to the possibility to achieve higher burnup level and potential of more uranium loading than any other current commercially available fuel assembly. First reload contracts are signed and GAIA fuel assemblies for reloads will be delivered from 2019 onwards.
