Expectations for standard model physics at the LHC
Description
Many detailed experimental tests of various Standard Model predictions have been performed during the last 20 years. These tests have confirmed the theoretical view to astonishing precision. New and sometimes precise experimental tests of the Standard Model will also be performed by the large omni-purpose experiments ATLAS and CMS at the LHC. Some of these potential measurements and their anticipated accuracy are reviewed. Even though this part of the LHC program is often called the bread and butter physics, arguments are given why the understanding of Standard Model processes might even be essential to discover and understand the new physics at the LHC.
