Description
The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor project (ITER) is a multiphase project presently proceeding under the auspices of the IAEA according to the terms of a four-party agreement among the European Atomic Energy Community (EU), the Government of Japan (JA), the Government of the Russian Federation (RF), and the Government of the United States (US), referred to herein as 'the Parties.' Under the ITER EDA Agreement, the Parties have agreed to jointly conduct Engineering Design Activities to produce a detailed, complete, and fully integrated engineering design of ITER as well as all technical data necessary for decisions related to the construction of ITER. The ITER Detailed Design Report, Cost Review and Safety Analysis Report, with a detailed technical basis, has been submitted and is under review. Significant progress in design and R and D has been achieved. The deliverables expected at the end of the EDA will meet the originally planned schedule, which will allow for the first plasma by the end of 2008, assuming the start of construction activities immediately after the EDA (July 1998). This paper reviews the progress of the physics, engineering design and technology R and D obtained by January 1997. (J.P.N.)
