Description

Use of nuclear technology for human welfare has penetrated into various fields of life. In the use and development of nuclear technology is always produced radioactive waste as the rest of the process. The radioactive waste must be managed properly and in accordance with applicable regulations, to prevent the effects of radiation on workers, the public and the environment. The basic principle in the processing of radioactive waste is a volume reduction and immobilization. In the management of radioactive waste must meet the requirements of radiation protection, namely justification, limitation and optimization. So that radiation exposure is not excessive, it is necessary to pay attention to the radiation protection principles, namely: radiation shield, distance and time. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate safety in radioactive waste management and spent fuel. The data comes from the results of radiation exposure measurement of work area and monitoring of external radiation doses received by workers. Measurement of radiation exposure is done in areas where radiation workers are located. Radiation exposure limits for radiation workers is 10 μSv/h, setting personnel in radioactive waste treatment activities following the recommendations of the radiation protection officer (RPO). One of the strategies undertaken by RPO is to apply the radiation protection principles. Radiation dose of workers and RPO in 2016 was still far below the limiting value predetermined doses of 10 and 15 mSv/year. The small dose values obtained indicate that safety in the radioactive waste management and spent fuel have been implemented at any stage of activity. (author)
