Ion beam experiment using OKTAVIAN

Description
In order to conduct experiments with low-energy ion beams, a 20cmφx24cm cylinder-type vacuum chamber with some particle detectors was installed at the end section of a 300keV, nanosecond-pulse deuteron accelerator OKTAVIAN. In Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy using this beam, a time-of-flight (TOF) method with a microchannel plate as a particle detector gave much better energy resolution and signal-to-noise ratio than conventional methods with semiconductor detectors. Also energy spectrum of deuterons undergoing the energy loss in a thin aluminum foil was measured with the TOF method and was compared with that obtained by the computer simulation with TRIM code.
