Nonmetastable Penning ionization in He(31P) -Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe collisions

  • 1. Physics Department, Schuster Laboratory, University of Manchester, Manchester M13 9PL, England

Description

Time-dependent spectroscopy techniques have been used to determine the cross sections for the deexcitation of nonmetastable He(3 1P) states by collision with Ne, Ar, Kr, or Xe atoms. The measured cross sections in 10/sup -16 cm2 at 600/sub -100/sup +200 degreeK are, for Ne, 27.6/sub -2/.8/sup +4.5; Ar, 55.6/sub -7/.8/sup +10.6; Kr, 49.5/sub -4/.8/sup +8.0; and Xe, 73.0/sub -8/.8/sup +12.9. These cross sections are compared with theoretical Penning ionization cross sections having values of 20 for Ne, 40 for Ar, 39 for Kr, and 35 for Xe, in units of 10/sup -16 cm2 (at 600 degreeK)
