Superdeformation of Gd isotopes
Description
The isotopes of gadolinium, 146-150Gd, have proved extremely fertile ground for the study of superdeformation in atomic nuclei. The factors governing the population of rotational bands built on superdeformed states were first elucidated here; the nucleus 149Gd currently holds the world's record highest nuclear spin at 135/2 K. Recent analysis has shown that the observed structures can be understood if neutrons are assumed to occupy successively higher single particle orbitals generated in a cranked modified-harmonic-oscillator potential. The most recent results obtained with the world's most powerful γ-ray spectrometer (the Anglo-French EUROGAM) will be presented
