High-PT inclusive hadron production in π-p collisions at 40 GeV and angles 49 degrees ≤θcm≤93 degrees

Description

The invariant differential cross sections for production of π±, K±, p, and bar p in π-p collisions are measured at five values of the polar angle θcm with a rotating double-arm spectrometer. The range of the scaling variable was 0.1≤xT≤0.9. The cross sections are well fitted by an exponential. The ratios of the same- and opposite-sign charged-particle production are obtained as a function of θcm and pT. The results are compared with calculations based on QCD and data obtained at higher energies. One can see that at small θcm the particle production is dominated by valence quarks of the beam π meson. 12 refs., 21 figs., 2 tabs
