Carbomagnesiation of several norbornene derivatives catalyzed by Cp2ZrC12

Description
The authors study the reaction of Et2Mg and EtMgBr with bicyclo(2.2.1) heptene derivatives containing highly active double bonds. Cp2ZrC12 catalyzes the steroselective cis-carbomagnesiation of norbornene and dicyclopentadiene by diethylmagnesium and ethylmagnesium bromide. In the case of norbornadiene, the carbomagnesiation is accompanied by an intramolecular rearrangement leading to a substitute nortricyclene
