Empirical properties of the mass discrepancy in groups and clusters of galaxies. V. Nine samples

The present paper analyzes (i) a sample of 12 rich clusters and (ii) a sample of five superclusters. Results from the entire series of five papers are summarized and discussed. It is concluded that the correlation between the ratio of virial mass to luminous mass ( ) and virial velocity dispersion (V), in which Mvt/M increases by a factor of about 100 as Vincreases from 100 km - 1 to 1000 km - 1, is observed for the following types of systems of galaxies: isolated classical double galaxies, classical double galaxies with one component the most luminous massive member of a "solar system-type" loose group, isolated double compact galaxies, double supergiant galaxies in rich clusters, compact groups, loose groups, rich clusters, and superclusters(:). M,,ttM is correlated with virial radius (R) for loose groups, but not for the other types of systems. V is not significantly correlated with R. The median value of at a given V depends on type of system, and on dominant morphological type (spiral, mixed, or elliptical) of the galaxies in a system. Subject heading: galaxies, clusters of
