Description
The results of pulsed neutron scattering studies on YBa2Cu4O8 and of x-ray diffuse scattering studies of single crystal La2-xSrxCuO4 are discussed. They convincingly demonstrate local deviations from the crystallographic structure, and indicate that the dynamics of at least a part of charge carriers are slow enough for the lattice to follow. The observations are explained in terms of the two-carrier model. In this model one type of carriers are heavy, dressed by phonons and possibly by Cu spins, exhibiting a polaronic character. These heavy carriers co-exist with light carriers which provide conductivity. Superconductivity could arise from the interplay between the two. (author)
