Description
Objective: To assess the value of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) coincidence SPECT in lymph node and distant metastasis staging of patients with esophageal cancer. Methods: 18F- FDG coincidence SPECT and CT were performed and interpreted before surgery in 45 patients with newly diagnosed esophageal cancer. The results were then compared with the associated post surgical histological data. Results: The specificity and positive prediction rate of 18F-FDG coincidence SPECT in the detection of lymph nodes metastasis were higher than that in CT detection (P<0.05). 18F-FDG coincidence SPECT, the specificity, positive prediction and accuracy in the detection of non-peritumoral lymph nodes, were higher than those in CT detection (P<0.05). The specificity of 18F-FDG coincidence SPECT in the detection of peritumoral lymph nodes metastasis was higher than that in CT detection (P<0.05). 18F-FDG coincidence SPECT found distant metastasis in 7 patients. Conclusion: 18F-FDG coincidence SPECT can be used as an important tool for the initial staging and selection of treatment planning in the patients with esophageal cancer. (authors)
