Preparation and characterization of the ternary compounds BaRE2F8 with RE = Dy - Lu and Y

Description
Systematic phase investigations were carried out on the systems BaF2-REF3. At the composition (Ba,RE)Fsub(2.667) there exist intermediate compounds BaRE2F8 only in the case of RE = Dy - Lu and Y which crystallize monoclinic with the space group C2/m. Thermal analyses revealed that BaYb2F8 and BaLu2F8 have in addition a high-temperature form somewhat below the melting point. These modifications can be quenched to room-temperature and crystallize orthorhombic with the space group Pmmn. The lattice parameters are reported for all phases as well as indexed d values for both BaLu2F8 forms. (author)
