Oxidation kinetics and heat capacity measurements of (U1-yEry)O2 (y =0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2)

  • 1. Fuel Chemistry Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

Rare-earth doped (U1-yEry)O2 solid solutions (R= Gd, Dy and Er), are widely used as a neutron absorber to increase the burnup of uranium oxide based nuclear fuels. Heat capacity, thermal conductivity and thermal expansion are the most important thermo-physical properties of nuclear fuels which directly influences fuel performance during reactor operation. Thermal diffusivity and thermal expansion of (U1-yEry)O2 as a function of erbium content have been were reported. Present work is on heat capacity measurements of (U1yEry)O2 and study of oxidation kinetics using heat flux type Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG), respectively
