On some possibilities of investigating the products of heavy ion reactions using magnetic analyzers

Description

The possibilities of using a step-pole magnetic spectrograph to investigate nuclear reaction products are considered. The properties of this spectrograph are compared with those of other magnetic analyzers of the same class. The focal plane of the analyzer is calibrated using the multiple-charged 40Ar and 136Xe ion beams with an energy spread of about 1%. The charge distribution of 147Dy and 199Po produced by the nuclear reactions 113Cd(40Ar, 6n) and 164Dy(40Ar, 5n) was found to be strongly different from the calculated one. The reasons leading to the increase of the average ion equilibrium charge of reaction products are analyzed, and some methods to normalize the charge distributions are given. The use of avalanche and proportional counters for detection and identification of nuclear reaction products in the focal plane of the analyzer is considered. It is shown that the analyzers are promising tools for the study of reaction products emitted at 0deg. (author)
