Immobilization of high-level wastes into sintered glass: 1

Description

In order to immobilize the high-level radioactive wastes from fuel elements reprocessing, borosilicate glass was adopted. Sintering experiments are described with the variety VG 98/12 (SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3, B2O3, MgO, CaO and Na2O) (which does not present devitrification problems) mixed with simulated calcinated wastes. The hot pressing line (sintering under pressure) was explored in two variants 1: In can; 2: In graphite matrix with sintered pellet extraction. With scanning electron microscopy it is observed that the simulated wastes do not disolve in the vitreous matrix, but they remain dispersed in the same. The results obtained point out that the leaching velocities are independent from the density and from the matrix type employed, as well as from the fact that the wastes do no dissolve in the matrix. Abstract (Spanish)

Para inmovilizar los residuos de alta actividad provenientes de combustibles irradiados se adoptaron los vidrios borosilicados. Se presentan experiencias de sinterizacion de la variedad VG 98/12 (SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3, B2O3, MgO, CaO, Na2O) que no causa problemas de desvitrificacion mezclado con residuos calcinados simulados. Se sigue la linea de prensado en caliente (sinterizado bajo presion). De esta linea se ensayaron dos variantes 1: Dentro del recipiente definitivo; 2: En matriz de grafito con extraccion de la pastilla sinterizada. Mediante microscopia electronica de barrido, se observa que los residuos simulados no se disuelven en la matriz vitrea, sino que quedan dispersos en la misma. Los resultados obtenidos indican que las velocidades de lixiviacion son independientes de la densidad y del tipo de matrix utilizada como tambien del hecho de que los residuos no se disuelven en la matriz.
