Description

The 14N/15N ratio of nitrogen gas generated from a sample can be determined by mass spectrometry or emission spectrometry. The 14N and 15N atoms in nitrogen gas are paired to form molecules 14N-14N, 14N-15N and 15N-15N, which can be written as 28N2, 29N2 and 30N2. Both mass and emission spectrometric methods provide output signals which are proportional to the number of these three types of molecules. 2 figs, 1 tab
