Description
In the field of nuclear industry, one of the concepts of fundamental importance is the neutron economy. The use of neutrons in a reactor, both fusion and fission is varied, from the way they are produced, through the efficiency of generating them, their internal energy, to the way in which they are stopped, and they represent for the industry a challenge of both research, engineering and technology. For this proposal, its use for the development of neutron sources is proposed as the main entry point for nuclear fusion in the nuclear fission industry. Sources of fusion-based neutrons can be turned on and off directly, therefore the risk of unintended neutron exposure is significantly mitigated, also sources of fusion neutrons emit neutrons with very high energies, improving power of actinide burning, allowing the transmutation of irradiation products to be of shorter half-lives, which is less likely to occur with low-energy neutrons. Therefore, design studies focused on maximizing neutron output from fusion sources and optimizing neutron economics (neutrons are also necessary in the fusion reactor for tritium generation, which merges with natural deuterium) are required.
