ABPD systems for measuring artificial alpha activities with separate beta measurement
Description
The well-known pseudo-coincidence method of commpensating for natural radon and thoron daughter products in measurements of airborne activity is characterized by its independence of energy. ABPD systems therefore are used in measurements of airborne concentrations of artificial alpha emitting radionuclides over the entire range of alpha energies encountered, i.e., also to detect high-energy transuranium isotopes with alpha energies in excess of 5.8 MeV. In this respect, the system differs from other techniques, such as the alpha spectrometric methods, whose compensation for natural alpha emitters is effective only for energies below 5.8 MeV. (orig.)

Das bekannte Pseudokoinzidenz-Verfahren zur Kompensation der natuerlichen Radon- und Thoron-Folgeprodukte bei der Luftaktivitaetsmessung zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass es energieunabhaengig arbeitet. Die ABPD-Anlagen werden deshalb eingesetzt zur Messung der Luftkonzentration von kuenstlichen alphastrahlenden Radionukliden im gesamten Bereich der vorkommenden Alpha-Energien, d.h. auch zur Erfassung von hochenergetischen Transuran-Isotopen mit Alpha-Energien von ueber 5,8 MeV. Dies unterscheidet sie von anderen Systemen, wie den alphaspektrometrischen Methoden, deren Kompensation der natuerlichen Alphastrahler nur fuer Energien unterhalb 5,8 MeV wirksam wird.
