Measurement of the quadrupole moments of the strongly deformed nuclei 18173Ta108 and 18375Re108 by hyperfine interaction in metals

Description

The quadrupole moments of two single particle proton states were measured in the strongly deformed nuclei region. Both measurements are independent of model because the field gradient is known in a rhenium lattice as well as at the nucleus site of a rhenium atom and also at the nucleus site of an incorporated tantalum atom. The quadrupole moments could thus be directly extracted from the quadrupole interaction frequency, the product of quadrupole moment and field gradient. For the 482 keV state (I = 5/2+) in 18173Ta108 one obtains a quadrupole moment of: Q (5/2) = 2.5 +- 0.2 barn. For the 496 keV state (I = 9/2-) in 18375Re108, a quadrupole moment of: Q (0/2) = 3.6 +- 0.4 barn is found. This value agrees well with other experimental data within the framework of the collective model. (orig./LH)

Abstract (German)

Im Bereich der stark deformierten Kerne wurden die Quadrupolmomente zweier Einzelteilchen-Protonenzustaende gemessen. Beide Messungen sind modellunabhaengig, weil der Feldgradient in einem Rheniumgitter sowohl am Kernort eines Rheniumatoms als auch am Kernort eines eingebauten Tantalatoms bekannt ist. Die Quadrupolmomente konnten so direkt der Quadrupolwechselwirkungsfrequenz, dem Produkt aus Quadrupolmoment und Feldgradient, entnommen werden. Fuer den 482 keV-Zustand (I = 5/2+) im 18173Ta108 ergibt sich ein Quadrupolmoment von: Q (5/2) = 2,5 +- 0,2 barn. Fuer den 496 keV-Zustand (I = 9/2-) im 18375Re108 erhaelt man ein Quadrupolmoment von: Q (9/2) = 3,6 +- 0,4 barn. Dieser Wert stimmt sehr gut mit anderen experimentellen Daten im Rahmen des kollektiven Modells ueberein. (orig./WL)
