Compton scattering from the K shell electrons of Ta and Pb

Full text: Coincidence techniques have been used in this experiment to study Compton Scattering of 320 and 662 keV gamma rays by K-shell electrons of Ta and Pb. The experiment uses two high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors for detecting coincidence events. For accurate determination of the continuous Compton scattered spectrum, the energy resolution and response function of the detectors need to be known. The detector calibration consists of two aspects: (i) experimental determination of the full energy peak (FEP) efficiency at eight energies and (ii) Monte-Carlo Modelling of the physical processes which determine the detector efficiency and response function. The experimental signals collected from the two detectors together with time between the incoming signals are recorded in a multi parameter pulse height analysis (MP-PHA) system. The recorded data is analysed for true coincidences. The Monte-Carlo Modelling technique is employed to estimate the interferences due to Photoelectric effect-Bremsstrahlung coincidences. The experimental data are measured for different thickness of the targets at scattering angles in range 50-150 deg allowing determination of the doubly differential cross sections of discrete angles
