Study of chemical and electrochemical properties of some elements in molten NaAlCl

We describe a study of the electrochemical and chemical properties in molten mixtures of Aluminium Chloride-Sodium chloride, at 210 deg. C and the concept of acidity, related to chloride activity, is previously summarized. In a first part, the study of Mercury and Cadmium by means of electro-analytical techniques, states the Hg2+2, Hg2+, Cd2+2 and Cd2+ ions and their acid properties. Some diagrams Equilibrium potential vs acidity are the synthesis of these results. In a second part, it is shown that a nickel electrode is an indicator of the presence of oxide ions; from interpretation of electrochemical results, O2 appears to behave, in terms of the chloro-acido-basicity concept, as a strong di-base, giving the solvated form AlOCl-2, or a strong tri-base giving AlOCl. A saturation effect by Al2O3 appears when the oxide concentration is increased; the solubility of Al2O3 versus acidity is determined from the electrochemical results. In a third part, results for the Ni/Ni(II) or HCl/H2O systems are related to dissolved oxide ion presence in chloroaluminate melts; elimination of oxide ions, through H2O formation, by reaction with HCl is noteworthy. Abstract (French)
Nous decrivons l'etude des proprietes chimiques et electrochimiques de quelques elements dans les melanges fondus chlorure d'aluminium-chlorure de sodium a 210 deg. C. Nous rappelons tout d'abord les notions d'acidite, traduites par l'activite de l'ion chlorure, qu'on peut appliquer a ces melanges en accord avec les definitions de la solvoacidite. Une premiere partie est consacree a l'etude electrochimique des degres d'oxydation stables du mercure et du cadmium. Nous avons ainsi mis en evidence les ions Hg2+2, Hg2+, Cd2+2 et Cd2+ et determine pour chacun leurs proprietes acides. Des diagrammes potentiel d'equilibre-acidite traduisent ces resultats. Dans une seconde partie, apres avoir montre qu'une electrode de nickel est indicatrice de l'activite des ions oxyde, nous avons deduit des resultats electrochimiques que l'ion O2 est une dibase ou tribase forte, a laquelle correspondent respectivement en solution les formes AlOCl-2 ou AlOCl. De plus, les plus grandes valeurs de la concentration de O(-II) sont limitees par la solubilite de l'alumine. Nous avons deduit des resultats electrochimiques, ses variations en fonction de l'acidite. Dans une troisieme partie, nous avons examine l'influence de la presence d'ion oxyde sur le comportement de quelques systemes: Ni/Ni(II) et HCl/H2O. L'elimination de O(-II) par un balayage de HCl et formation d'eau doit etre notee. (auteur)Files
